Okay, so Sade takes time between albums, but when we finally get a new one, we know what we’ve been knowing: it’s been worth the wait. This album, like all Sade albums, is one you can turn on and just listen to from beginning to end. There are no songs that really stand out as obvious radio singles, but I think that’s part of the coherence and beauty of a Sade album. Listeners and fans will no doubt have individual favorites though.
Known for their one of a kind timeless sound, Sade has enjoyed phenomenal success both internationally and stateside throughout the span of their twenty-five year career. The highly anticipated new body of work SOLDIER OF LOVE features 10 new songs including the latest single, “Soldier Of Love”.
Sade is Great!! – Jesse D. Hare –

I’ve been a fan of Sade since Diamond Life. Also, back in the 80’s, there was this rapper, Big Daddy Kane, who perfectly describes Sade’s new release:
“Your vocab, I’ll only ignore
Be sleeping on your rhymes till I start to snore.”
Please skip over “Soldier of Love”. Maybe in ten years they will wake up and put out an album we want to hear again.
Just because you’re a fan doesn’t require you to give 5 stars to everything they do – It’s me – LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK USA
That’s the problem I see here is as I’ve often seen before with other artists; movie stars and singers. What happens is that people who become fans of an artist often become loyal to them to the point where they’re willing to think only good of them no matter what; to the point where they’re willing give 5 stars to an album they rarely listen to because their loyalty won’t allow them to admit they don’t really like it.
I’m a fan also, but I also try to be objective no matter how much it hurts me to say one of my fav artists made a crap album. If you liked Sade because of her down to earth seductive sound as witnessed in her previous albums, you will be soarly dissapointed with this one. In this album her seduction is gone and replaced with more conventional, childish, pop-like beats. Most of the songs are about lost love, but they are not at all soulfull. Instead they come off as desperate and depressing. There’s nothing special about this album. It has no nuances. Any subpar artist could have done this. I expected more from Sade.

I was captivated by Beth Rowley’s haunting “Nobody’s Fault But My Own” on my way home from work (she was featured on NPR), and knew that I had to have more of her smokey, gospel blues-tinged debut Little Dreamer. Roughly half of the album has that hand-waving church vibe that makes you want to sway in place with your eyes closed, caught up in the power of the music. “Only One Cloud” is a moody song that sounds like a field spiritual. Jim Crawford’s “When the Rains Came” is fronted by a haunting Dobro with a driving bass that sounds like a Native American dance. “Almost Persuaded” tells the tale of “temptation flowing like wine.” The chorus of “You Never Called Me Tonight” has production values that sound like it could have come out of some lost Motown vault, with a sassy, almost funeral-like pounding piano knelling the death of the doomed relationship.
But Little Dreamer is multifaceted, and includes covers of Bob Dylan (I Shall Be Released) and Willie Nelson (Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground), along with some upbeat pop. The sweet, slow piano intro to “Sweet Hours” almost sounds like a lost Norah Jones gem as bass and snare step in to pick up the beat, while “So Sublime” flirts with hints of 1960s folk and pop. I wasn’t as crazy about “Angel”; Beth’s voice wasn’t as complementary to the song as on the stronger gospel-influenced tracks.
Overall, this is a very promising debut of another undeniably talented British singer-songwriter in the vein of Corinne Bailey Rae, Back to Black and 19 who truly inhabits the smoky, gospel-tinged blues tunes and makes them her own.
Born to British missionary parents in Peru and raised in Bristol, England, songstress Beth Rowley is a British talent poised for greatness.
“Little Dreamer”, Rowley’s debut album, charted at #6 on the British charts the first week out in May. Largely co-written by Beth with saxophonist Ben Castle (Duke Special/Jamie Cullum), the album has a bluesy, soulful sound that is captivating and unique – yet belies her youth.
Highlights include “So Sublime,” “Oh My Life,” “Sweet Hours,” and covers of the Willie Nelson classic “Angels Flying Too Close to the Ground” and Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released”.
Cute, curly-headed diva Beth Rowley won many hearts with her charming Violets EP. Born in Peru and raised in the English West Country, Rowley has been mentored by Carleen Anderson and now follows up on the success of that EP with Little Dreamer, an album that continues her sweetly old fashioned, Motown-esque blend of blues, gospel, soul and jazz–all peppered with a classic mainstream sheen. Produced by Steve Power (Blur) and Kevin Bacon & Jonathan Quarmby (Richard Hawley, Finlay Quaye), the album discloses a voice as jaw-droppingly flawless and hopelessly compelling as a Norah Jones or Amy Winehouse, but with atmospheric traces of Karen Carpenter, Aretha Franklin and Eva Cassidy too. Tracks like the stunning gospel blues of “Almost Persuaded” and soulful single “Oh My Life” are good examples of what to expect from this cozy, feelgood album. The reggae pulse of “I Shall Be Released” tends to undermine the power and beauty of the original, but slow, heartfelt blues numbers like “One Cloud” more than make up for these blips. Rowley plays it safe on Little Dreamer, but it’s a stunning collection nonetheless. –Danny McKenna
Fantastic artist, would buy future albums – JJ Christensen – Orange County, Southern CA, USA
I bought this album upon the recommendation of a former student, and boy, it did NOT disappoint. I think this girl can take Norah Jones out for a spin at the park and come out ahead.
Soulful – S. Wright –
I’ve really enjoyed this album over the 5 or 6 weeks that I have owned it. This is not a pop or R&B album. What it is, is a beautifully written and performed vocally driven blues/jazz/folk/pop with some definite gospal tones album. I highly recommend it.
Beth Rowley “Little Dreamer” – Anna Jean – Portland, OR
Singers like Beth Rowley make me grateful that I can hear. This album has the power to heal wounds of the soul and inspire. Blues music taken to another level is exactly what Beth Rowley has achieved. Whatever your generation, I believe this album fits with its easy listening and absolute ageless beauty.
Simply beautiful – lucien larose – México
One of the best voices of jazz-pop nowadays. I specially recommend “Oh My Life”, “Almost Persuaded” and the beautiful “Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground”.
